John Burland is an educator and composer who has been writing and recording religious music for children and adults for over twenty years. He has worked with children and educators in schools, parish communities and educational institutions across Australia, New Zealand and North America promoting the celebration of our Catholic faith through song, movement, meditative prayer and story.
Throughout his career, John has been working in Primary/Elementary schools throughout Sydney holding a variety of executive positions including that of Religious Education Coordinator, Assistant Principal and Acting Principal. He holds a Bachelor of Education, Post Graduate Diploma in Religious Education, and is currently completing further study in Religious Education and Theology.
He was the Associate Musical Director and contributing songwriter for Jubilee 2000, a celebration of over 93,000 Sydney Catholic school students, teachers, parents and religious at Stadium Australia in March 2000, and was the Associate Musical Director and a featured performer for the Archdiocese of Sydney Official Jubilee Celebration, Celebrate 2000.
In 2008, two of John's liturgical compositions, Come O Holy Spirit and Lord By Your Cross were included in the official World Youth Day liturgies in Sydney, Australia.
Community Work & Music
John has specifically written songs and lead celebrations for organisations such as Austcare, Centacare, Catholic Education Office, Sydney, the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney, the Australian National Primary Principals' Conference, World Youth Day 2008 and the Orlando Faith Formation Day in 2009.
His musical collections include:
John regularly presents workshops and celebrations across the United States, New Zealand and Canada. He has been a workshop presenter at the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Religious Education Congress in 2002/2004-2010 and at the National Catholic Educational Association Conventions in 2002 (Atlantic City), 2003 (St Louis), 2004 (Boston), 2005 (Philadelphia), 2006 (Atlanta), 2007 (Baltimore), 2009 (Los Angeles) and 2010 (Minneapolis). He has also presented at the Fresno Religious Education Congress, the New Zealand Catholic Education Convention, the Orlando Faith Formation Day in 2009, and the Diocese of Regina Liturgy/ Music Workshop Day in 2010.
John works in partnership with Our Sunday Visitor Curriculum Division (previously Harcourt Religion Publishers) who are distributing his materials in North America.
John works for the Catholic Education Office in Sydney as the Project Officer - Liturgy/Music, where he conducts workshops, celebrations and reflection days for children, teachers and parish communities. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Sydney, Australia.
